In the heart of Nottingham City you’ll find one of the most diverse Grime artists where not only does his music actively appeal to the underground scene but also reaches out to an intellectual audience.
Wariko’s first musical influences were Reggae and Dancehall. His stepfather was part of a well known UK sound system called V Rocket.
Wariko first took to the stage when he was just 11 years old, for a crowd with over 500+ people at a talent contest in the Marcus Garvey Centre. He went on to win the competition and that was when his passion for music began.
In 2005 Wariko got involved in a local Grime collective called NG Cartel. The crew performed on Dj Cameo’s show on BBC 1xtra, Cameo was so impressed with the team’s talent, versatility and hunger he invited them back to the show for regular sets.
Wariko’s name soon developed a buzz. He started working with well-known grime artist all over the country, recording tracks with DJ Mondie, Shizzle and SLK to name a few. Wariko was featured on DVD’s such as Risky Roadz, Aim High and LBTV.
Wariko’s his first mix CD titled ‘I Ain’t Lyin’ was a great success, selling a thousand plus units from sales up and down the country.
In 2006 Wariko recorded a track with Ms Dynamite and Selah titled ‘Gonna make it thru’. The track was supported by BBC Radio1 and listed as ‘Record of the week’. The trio also supported Missy Elliot at her UK show.
In 2008 Wariko started the LRG (‘Lyrics Rhymes and Grime’). Wariko and LRG performed at numerous events including the converted grime event Sidewinder. They also opened for U.S rap star Papoose at Nottingham’s Rock City. Their tracks were supported by BBC Radio Dj’s Mista Jam, Semtex and Dj Cameo amongst others.
Still in LRG Wariko put out his second solo Mix CD entitled ‘Lost Folders’.
In late 2009 Wariko decided it was time to go solo. He continued to work with two producers from LRG now better known as the BeatGeeks. The team began work on an exciting new project entitled ‘Natural Born Poet’ which is due for release in March 2012.
Wariko then put out his third Mix CD ‘Double Time Poet’ followed by ‘Puddin N Treacle’ which was produced by Grime heavyweight Z Dot and BeatGeeks.
In 2011 Wariko was featured on the legendary DVD ‘Lord of The Mics’. Wariko was up against well-known Grime veteran D power aka Diesle. He also featured in the LOTM All-stars video which is the playlist of Flava TV, Channel AKA and MTV Base. Wariko then released his most popular Mix CD to date, ‘The Overtime Project’. The 20 track free download was hosted by Rinse FM’s SK Vibemaker and received over 1000 + download within 24 hours.
Wariko’s future plans are to capitalise on his previous success in 2011 which turned out to be his self proclaimed best musical year. To do this he is releasing ‘Natural Born Poet’, two further more EPs and another two MIX CDs alongside various visuals to compliment the most successful tracks.
So here we go Snowy is GPtv’s second Rising Star ,
Snowy is a 15 year old rap and grime artist from the Top Valley and Bestwood areas of Nottingham, England. He grew up listening to artists such as Crazy Titch, Dizzee Rascal and Wiley on Channel U and was fixated upon the Grimey sound they produced.
Around 2006 when he started properly writing lyrics, most MC’s of Nottingham were at war with each other having their famous dubplate wars. The Battles that influenced him the most were the Marvin and Kezzy K battles as they happened within the same area he lived in, also the battles of Brown Bally Goons, Valley Villainz and Raiders. The Nottingham scene was crazy at these times ,the battles that occured included GRG, BadBreed, Greylands and SOS.
As he got older Snowy started to research Grime properly and started getting more involved when people were splitting their lyrics out and about. He recorded his first track at William Olds Youth Club in Bestwood named “SnowQuake“. After getting good feedback from ‘SnowQuake’ that Snowy started to write and record more, a lot of which is un-released and some of which are on his soundcloud (http://soundcloud.com/snow667).
Snowy’s big break was when he met P Money and Cameraman Sketch in Nottingham in 2010 and spat a lyric for them. Only 14 at the time, they were both impressed and then struck a deal with the young Snowy; a chance to be on Cameraman Sketchs channel for a New Talent video. After the video was uploaded to Youtube http://www.youtube.com/user/Snowski667 good comments and feedback soon followed from the people who watched it.
He made new friends and followers within the Nottingham scene and started doing more videos, tracks and recording with CRS (Big Trev who has been manager to Scorzayzee, 2Tone, Jah Digga, Jay Eye and many more).
Now known as the top half of Nottinghams youngers he has been all over the Midlands to do videos and link ups – notably P110, Kashkam and UGX – and been on sets with the likes of Wariko, Kriptik, Marvin, Wipz and the BeatGeeks and DJ Grimsen.
Snowy’s personal highlight is being at the Lord Of The Mic 3 tour with Wariko and others from Nottingham and being able to bar in front around 1000 people.
