1. How did you get started with your DJing? 

An ex partner is a dj and I started practicing on his decks. I got the bug and bought my own and started buying vinyl to play and taught myself at home.

2. How did you become a Dejavu resident ?

I got my first radio show on DejaVu FM 3 years ago and I’m still there!

   
3. Where would be your dream venue to play? 

An underground club in New York

4. What clothes do you prefer to wear when you play out? 

Something comfortable!

5. If you had 3 vinyls you could save in a fire what would they be? 

Three is not enough! But Large Joints Friends, Black Rascals Keeping my mind and The Cheese & Pickle EP 

 

6. Do you prefer Radio sets or Live sets? 

Radio, I’m an introvert so prefer doing my thing like that

7. Vinyls or VIP dubs on CDs 

Vinyls every time…

8. What’s the biggest difference between radio and live sets? 

No distractions with radio, no stress getting paid and no-one asking for The Jackson 5 whilst you’re playing Spin spin sugar…

9. Do you produce ?? 

No

10. Where was your favorite gig ??  

A warehouse party New Years Eve in Old St where half the crowd were naked

SO I CAUGHT UP WITH THE LOVELY STEPH, OF DEJA’S GRIMY MONDAY LINE UP TO TALK DJING, CLOTHES AND MUSIC

1.How did you get started with your djing?

 

Basically when I was like 14 I decided that I wanted to learn how to Dj and I told one of my uncles who was going to throw away his decks to give it to me. It was just a basic setup nothing special like cdj’s. And I started teaching myself how to DJ. I had no clue about counting bars I just dropped the tunes in at random points. Then one day I did a music production course, which taught me about count bars, and I put two and two together. Then I had a Dj friend who taught me a few things and gave me a nice collection of grime. I burned them on to cd and started learning from there.

2. How did you become a Dejavu DJ?

 

I have always listened to Deja and I’ve been there a couple times and met D Power Diesle. When I came out as a Dj, we spoke and he gave me a show.

3. Where would be your dream venue to play?

 

My dream venue to play at would be at a festival, like Glastonbury, wireless, outlook etc.

4. What clothes do you prefer to wear when you play out?

 

When I start doing bookings, I think what I wear on that day would be based on how I am feeling. I could wear heels or trainers it all depends on my mood.

5. If you had 3 vinyls you could save in a fire what would they be?

 

I don’t have any vinyl’s, but if I could save anything musically in a fire, it would be my hard drive, where all my old grime tunes are saved on, cds, my decks, serato and laptop. I would probably die in a fire trying to save all that.

6. Do you prefer Radio sets or Live sets?

 

This is a tricky question. I only play on radio at the moment. But just from seeing what other dj’s do, I would say both. Because seeing the crowd reaction when you play certain tunes must be a great feeling and radio sets are good because you can play what you want and educate the listeners as well as entertain.
7. Vinyls or VIP dubs on CDs ?

 

Definitely VIP dubs on cds because that’s what I play on.

8. What’s the biggest difference between radio and live sets?

 

s For me, it’s crowd reaction.

9. Do you produce ??

 

I’m still in the learning stages.

I GOT AN INTERVIEW WITH HER JUST BEFORE SHE STARTED HER 1XTRA RESIDENCY, HERE’S WHAT WENT DOWN .

1. How did you get started with your DJing? 

I started DJ’ing when I was 14, I had these shitty Numark CDJs and I used to play at my friends house parties and anywhere that would let me in really.

2. How did you become a 1xtra daily dose resident ?

My DJ’ing started to kick off for me towards the end of last summer, MistaJam played my ’1500 Seconds of Fame’ mix and it all got a bit crazy from there. Since then I upped the work rate, put out more mixes and played out loads..I think Jam recognised that and that’s why he asked me to be a resident.

3. Where would be your dream venue to play? 

Probably Outlook Festival so I’m hyped to be playing there this year

4. What clothes do you prefer to wear when you play out?

It depends, I’m not usually one for bait brands but you will rarely catch me not wearing a pair of Jordan’s or Timbs..I should really go around in some huge platforms inc ase the venue doesn’t have a box for me to stand on! I have a residency with Mono Audio and they promised they are gonna build a box for me with Jordan’s attached on to save time…

5. Do you prefer Radio sets or Live sets? 

Recording my Daily Dose mixes on 1Xtra is hard work cos I only use CDs, but it’s worth it to hear the finished product on air every 2 weeks. I guess I prefer DJ’ing at a club because it’s more fun than not being able to leave my uni room for days on end!

6. Do you produce ?? 
Nope and I don’t plan to at the moment. A few people have suggest I start but it’s just not for me, I wouldn’t put my all into it if I did because it’s not my main interest..I’d choose radio over producing to be honest, it would be sick to have a show on Rinse one day.

7. Where was your favorite gig ??  

Probably when I played at Mint during my first few weeks of Leeds Uni last September. It’s one of my favourite clubs and Hudson Mohawke cancelled so Ossie, TCTS and I filled in. I had just turned 19 and it was a lot!
