I CAUGHT UP WITH ONE HALF OF PROGRESSIVE INTELLIGENCE WHO ARE A LABEL BASED IN THE NETHERLANDS
How did you get started with your djing?
When I started to listen to music more actively I was always more fascinated by the beats rather than the lyrics.
Especially when I got introduced to Jungle and Drum & Bass and a bit later on Garage, listening to DJ mixes hearing tunes actually in the mix it made me think:
This is sick, I want to know how to do this. I didn’t really have people around me with decks to teach me so I had to wait till I got a bit older, earned some money
And I slowly started collecting vinyl (early Grime/Dubstep days) got some decks and a cheap mixer and just started practicing and practicing.
How did you become a DJ ?
As in doing actual gigs? I think the first one actually was a rave I’ve put on myself together with Sun O.C. whom I run Progressive Intelligence with. Couple years after I got invited to play at the OI rave in Paradiso Amsterdam, also came in contact with more promoters on the back of that as well.
Where would be your dream venue to play?
This will sound cheesy but to play in one of the bigger London venues like Fabric i.e. would be sick to represent the label there.
Also just festivals in general both national and abroad.
What clothes/trainers do you prefer to wear when you play out?
Just easy fitting clothes to be honest. I don’t mind wearing a suit but it’s not something I’d wear while DJing haha. So basically just jeans, shirt and comfortable trainers.
If you had 3 vinyls you could save in a fire what would they be?
This is a mad one because I love all my vinyl, even though I don’t use it that much now.
Definitely: Macabre Unit – Lift Off/Tensor Jam/Death By Stereo.
Then there’s Scott Garcia – It’s a London Thing.
And I think Dread D – For the Pirates vol. 3
But really, I probably would aim to carry at least one full crate out, flames or no flames.
Do you prefer Radio sets or Live sets?
I enjoy both but nothing beats feeling good and playing in front of a crowd and share that moment of gas when you play certain tunes.
Vinyls or VIP dubs on CDs?
Still love vinyl, but my vinyl decks are a myth and often in venues they are even a bigger myth now so for me personally digital dubs will do the job.
What’s the biggest difference between radio and live sets for you?
On radio I tend to make it more of a mix of hype/party stuff and easy listening/chilled out ones while in a rave my main objective will be to get them to move so it will be more on the dance floor side of things. Also in a rave you will get immediate response (or not) so you know if they’re feeling what you are playing while at radio this can be a bit harder to judge sometimes.
No, although I should be really. Had a period of actively writing bars actually but the main focus is the label now.
Where was your favorite gig ??
Would have to be at a rave in Utrecht where I played allsorts from Dubstep to Grime to bits of dark Garage and they loved all of it which Is not always guaranteed for these genres where I come from.
