Artist Showcase: Grizzly

Runako ‘Grizzly’ Williams was born in South London on the 24/3/87.

Grizzly comes from a musical background with well known musical figures in his family. With his father being the Infamous Mandingo, record producer from Spanish Town, Jamaica, who produced massive Reggae hits such as Sugar Minnotts ‘Every Little Thing’ and General Echo’s ‘Sex Educational Class’ which he also co-wrote; Grizzly is no stranger to the Industry.

Spending most of his school lunch times and break times penning lyrics Grizzly had his mind set on making it as a Grime MC. He would record lyrics on his mothers stereo any time he got the chance alongside his friends. By 2003 when Grizzly was leaving Archbishop Tenisons School, he began to doubt his abilities and turned to the street.

He stopped focusing on music and started living a different life. It was while Grizzly away for 9months at a Young offenders institute he looked at his life and said it was time to go back to what he loved. Back then he went by the name of Big Bear. Once released Grizzly found a group young talented people on the same mission he was, and this Group was Acre Lane Campaign or Artz Lyrics Culture as they like to be called(ALC).
It was here Grizzly started to make a real name for himself. Releasing his first official street mixtape ‘Streetz Animal’ under the name Bear, he made some underground buzz with his UK remixes to Fat Joe and Lil Wayne’s ‘Make It Rain’ called ‘Make It Clap’ and 50 Cent and The Games’ ‘This Is How We Do’ entitled ‘Blue Is What We Rep’. By 2007 he was making appearances on upcoming DVDs and becoming an artist.

Grizzly set up a home studio where he and friends would record their mixtapes and release them to the streets. In 2008 Grizzly released his first mixtape under the name Grizzly and this was the beginning of his AWOL series. AWOL Vol 1: New Face was a mixture of Genre as he was still trying to find the right lane which suited him.

Following this he took a 2 year Break to redefine himself as the Grizzly we see and hear today. AWOL Vol 2: Never Gonna Rest, a full Grime CD was released on his Birthday 24th march 2010 via UKRecordshop.com being sold. Grizzly had been away from the game for a long period of time so in July of that year Grizzly released it as a free download with 2 extra tracks and videos to back the CD and within 24 hours received over 2000 downloads.

Later that year AWOL 2.5: Recognise Artistic Passion emerged as another free download, this was a mix of Grime and Rap. Again visuals were delivered with this release. This biggest tracks being ‘Slicker Than Ya Average’ and his ‘POW’ freestyle.

Grizzly took a year out of the game due to the arrival of his new born son, but this time he stayed afloat by constantly promoting old material and upcoming mixtape vis Twitter and facebook.
On December 1st 2011 Grizzly returned with No Bring Ins mixtape which was long overdue and it made an impact to the scene he loved. This Mixtape shows the artistry that Grizzly possesses. This release was brought to you by Grizzlys Independent label Limitless Music Group, Hoodcelebritys.com and GrimeToFive.com He Put out infectious remixes to ‘OTIS’, Krepts ‘Paranormal Activity’ as well as some well arranged original tracks. Memorable tracks and strongest tracks being ‘Same Old’ ft Clencha, Raggatie and Level Man and ‘Respect Me’ a solo track in which Grizzly tells you his plan and feelings towards the scene.

Grizzly plans to remain relevant and some day make it to the top of the scene which he grew to love from a young age. Always working on new material, he promises never to be quiet for too long and always remain in your face no matter how much of a struggle it may be. His new releases will all be under the LMG label. Stay Locked and it tune to Grizzly.

Artist Showcase Wariko

In the heart of Nottingham City you’ll find one of the most diverse Grime artists where  not only does his music actively appeal to the underground scene but also reaches out to an intellectual audience.

Wariko’s first musical influences were Reggae and Dancehall. His stepfather was part of a well known UK sound system called V Rocket.

Wariko first took to the stage when he was just 11 years old, for a crowd with over 500+ people at a talent contest in the Marcus Garvey Centre. He went on to win the competition and that was when his passion for music began.

In 2005 Wariko got involved in a local Grime collective called NG Cartel. The crew performed on Dj Cameo’s show on BBC 1xtra, Cameo was so impressed with the team’s talent, versatility and hunger he invited them back to the show for regular sets.

Wariko’s name soon developed a buzz. He started working with well-known grime artist all over the country, recording tracks with DJ Mondie, Shizzle and SLK to name a few. Wariko was featured on DVD’s such as Risky Roadz, Aim High and LBTV.

Wariko’s his first mix CD titled ‘I Ain’t Lyin’ was a great success, selling a thousand plus units from sales up and down the country.

In 2006 Wariko recorded a track with Ms Dynamite and Selah titled ‘Gonna make it thru’. The track was supported by BBC Radio1 and listed as ‘Record of the week’. The trio also supported Missy Elliot at her UK show.

In 2008 Wariko started the LRG (‘Lyrics Rhymes and Grime’). Wariko and LRG performed at numerous events including the converted grime event Sidewinder. They also opened for U.S rap star Papoose at Nottingham’s Rock City. Their tracks were supported by BBC Radio Dj’s Mista Jam, Semtex and Dj Cameo amongst others.

Still in LRG Wariko put out his second solo Mix CD entitled ‘Lost Folders’.

In late 2009 Wariko decided it was time to go solo. He continued to work with two producers from LRG now better known as the BeatGeeks. The team began work on an exciting new project entitled ‘Natural Born Poet’ which is due for release in March 2012.

Wariko then put out his third Mix CD ‘Double Time Poet’ followed by ‘Puddin N Treacle’ which was produced by Grime heavyweight Z Dot and BeatGeeks.

In 2011 Wariko was featured on the legendary DVD ‘Lord of The Mics’. Wariko was up against well-known Grime veteran D power aka Diesle. He also featured in the LOTM All-stars video which is the playlist of Flava TV, Channel AKA and MTV Base. Wariko then released his most popular Mix CD to date, ‘The Overtime Project’. The 20 track free download was hosted by Rinse FM’s SK Vibemaker and received over 1000 + download within 24 hours.

Wariko’s future plans are to capitalise on his previous success in 2011 which turned out to be his self proclaimed best musical year. To do this he is releasing ‘Natural Born Poet’, two further more EPs and another two MIX CDs alongside various visuals to compliment the most successful tracks.

Artist Showcase Ms Dynamite

Ms. Dynamite was born and raised in Archway, a district in North London, to a Jamaican father and a Scottish mother. She grew up listening to reggae and hip hop music. Though she wanted to become a schoolteacher or social worker, her biggest aspiration was to be a musician. She is the eldest of eleven siblings, one of whom is a hip-hop artist known as Akala, and attended Acland Burghley School in London.

2001–04: A Little Deeper

Ms. Dynamite (originally called Lady Dynamite) was first known for her vocals on the UK garage underground track “Booo!”, which was regularly played on London pirate radio stations and was later released as a single. Whilst working at the radio station RAW FM, Ms Dynamite was discovered by Richard Forbes AKA DJ Sticky at a West End club. After working briefly with the UK garage act So Solid Crew, she released her debut album, A Little Deeper in 2002, featuring the hit songs “It Takes More” and “Dy-na-mi-tee“. In 2003, the album was released in the United States to critical acclaim. In 2002, Dynamite won the prestigious Mercury Music Prize,[1] for A Little Deeper. She donated the £20,000 prize to the NSPCC.

Her first public performance was at the closing ceremony of the 2002 Commonwealth Games at the City of Manchester Stadium. On 2 July 2005, she performed at the Live 8 concert in Hyde Park, London. Among the songs performed was “Redemption Song” – a Bob Marley penned song.

2005–06: Judgement Days

On 11 September 2005, she returned to the limelight (having taken time off to have her son, Shavaar) with a new album entitled Judgement Days. Featuring more social commentary, in songs such as the firstdouble A-side single, “Judgement Day” / “Father” and the Tony Blair critique, “Mr Prime Minister,” reviews of the album were not as favourable as those of her debut. However “Judgement Day” reached No. 25 in the UK .

On the 6 January 2006, Ms Dynamite was arrested outside a London nightclub, after a brawl in which she punched a male police officer in the face whilst in custody. She was convicted and sentenced to sixty hours of community service. The second single from Judgement Days was due to be “Fall In Love Again” (previously titled “When I Fall In Love”), with a release date of 30 January 2006. A video was shot for the track but, due to her arrest, the single was cancelled. The video did not surface until June 2006, when it was leaked on to the web.

In February 2006, she won the Naomi Award for Worst Urban Act.

Since her trouble in January 2006 and her disappearance from the public eye, Ms Dynamite confirmed that the much rumoured ‘A Little Darker’ album would be released in March 2006 as a mixtape. After the confirmation, the album was pushed back to June 2006. Also, in April 2006, Ms Dynamite confirmed that there would be no more releases from her Judgement Days album, and that she was due to start working on new material.

A collection of new and upcoming UK hip-hop and garage artists, was compiled by Ms Dynamite and her rapping brother Akala, who was voted Best Hip Hop Act at the MOBO Awards in September 2006.

In November 2006 she took part in a television show called The Race on Sky1. This was a week long event in which ten celebrities had to compete against each other on the track in different races building up to a thirty lap Formula Ford race on Sunday 12 November 2006. After about ten laps into the race disaster struck, and Ms. Dynamite hit the wall on the pit straight at about 100 mph. She was air lifted to hospital for overnight observations but later released.

2007–09: Break from music

After taking a break from the music scene for a couple of years, Dynamite guest hosted BBC Radio 1Xtra, and stated she would be releasing a third album ‘Democracy’ in 2009. The first single from the new album will be “Bad Gyal” This was however later confirmed to have been push back, to concentrate on other projects and well as motherhood.

Ms Dynamite appeared on Hell’s Kitchen on ITV1 in 2009 She was voted out by public vote on 24 April 2009 finishing fourth. Ms Dynamite also appeared as an expert adviser on Goldie’s Band: By Royal Appointment on BBC2.

2010–present: Return to music and third album

In December 2010, Dynamite was featured on Katy B‘s second single, “Lights On“. It peaked at number 4 in the UK singles chart. She was also featured on the track “Fire”, which featured on Magnetic Man‘s debut album.

On 3 August 2011 in an interview with Digital Spy, Dynamite confirmed that she is working on her third studio album, and confirmed that the lead single “Neva Soft” (produced by Labrinth) would be released on 4 September Her third studio album is set to be released at the beginning of 2012.
