I CAUGHT UP WITH JAMMER ONE OF GRIMES LEGENDARY FIGURES AHEAD OF HIS ALBUM LAUNCH
WE TALKED FASHION, RECORDING AND BRINGING THROUGH THE NEW GENERATION OF ARTISTS
SO, I’M HERE TO TALK ABOUT THE ALBUM ‘LIVINMG THE DREAM’ HOW LONG HAS IT BEEN IN THE MAKING ?
Funnyily enough its only taken me 2 months to record the album, one of the tracks [ Big man ] i had from last year. The rest of the album though has been in two months coz i was just in the zone.
YOU RECORDED 12 TRACKS IN 2 MONTHS, THAT’S MASSIVE ??
Everything in 2 months, the whole thing.
THAT’S CRAZY, THE ALBUM IS QUITE A MIX OF GENRES ISN’T IT ? DOES THAT REFLECT YOU MORE THAN DOING A STRAIGHT GRIME ALBUM NOWADAYS?
yeah i’ve always been somebody that’s been into all types of different music and produced loads of types of music, people just find out about the grime stuff oz that took off the biggest out of all the stuff i produced. so obviously being a grime pioneer and making iconic tracks alot of people wee like ‘yeah he just makes grime’ and when that was doing good for me i just stuck to it. rather than adventuring out of that.
WELL THAT MAKES SENSE REALLY DOESNT IT, IF THATS MAKING YOU MONEY N PUTTING YOU ON THE MAP,
Yeah 100% so now I’ve got my fans, and their die hard so now its time to show them what im capable of and a wider scope of music.
WHATS YOUR FAVOURITE TRACK OFF THE ALBUM?
Body and Soul, is actually my f avourite one personally, just me on the track just me wholly and solely on the track and my second favourite is ‘Fast Life’. Fast life features Skepta and Lay-Z. For me though the favourite is ‘Mind Body and Soul’ .
SO WHO ELSE IS ON THE ALBUM ? APART FROM SKEPTA AND LAY-Z? HAVE YOU WORKED WITH ANY FEMALE SINGERS/ ARTISTS?
No, do you know what I didnt want any. To be honest basically i have bounced off n worked with my cousin C-Gritz features on the album and we spend a lot of time to together bouncing off each other and writing. Slickman literally forced me to be on a track to do a verse and it be on the album [ laughs] and it was one of them ones and the verse is amazing! so ive left it on there. The Skepta one well, the only person I really wanted on the cd was Skepta, I felt that musically he is the only one on the wavelength of thinking what im thinking at the moment, musically two artists that have grown from mcing and started from the same time and developed i felt it was right to put him on the project. everything else was just a natural developement.
HOW DO YOU FROM A PERSONAL POINT OF VIEW, YOUR ‘BIG MAN’ SONG IS QUITE AN ANTHEM WITH BIG BARS THAT EVERYONE KNOWS. HOW DO YOU DECIDE ON WHO TO PUT ON A TRACK LIKE THAT? BECAUSE THERE IS SUCH A BIG MIX OF ARTISTS ON THAT TRACK?
Me and Skepta sat down and said we need to get this one right! We just wanted to capture the old school vibe, you know BLive, Viper and that with our vibe us being the pioneers of grime and the and the modern day scene JME, that whole era and capture the vibe before us the garage vibe with the likes of Flowdan and them and new MC’s like LayZ and Sox. Everyone over the last decade on one record.
DO YOU FEEL AS A BIT OF A VETERAN TO BRING THROUGH THE NEW GENERATION OF MC’S LIKE SOX?
Its definitely important because as im bringing em through its makes their life 10x easier, we can help them cut corners and also save them from making the same mistakes and also gives them a broader platform, it makes sense in my book.
THIS IS ONLY YOUR SECOND ALBUM AFTER 7 MIX CDS AND 78 VINYLS! WHICH IS CRAZY! ITS SUCH A MASSIVE BODY OF WORK !!
[JAMMER STAR TS LAUGHING]
DO YOU PLAN TO RELEASE ANYTHING ON TO VINYL ? IS THAT PLATFORM IMPORTANT TO YOU ANYMORE ?
You know what that whole scene has deteriorated for me and I don’t think scene is really there anymore and the value of what it means have gone and I think its a historical thing now, ‘like do you remember the days of …’ There are still people out there that release on vinyl but for me I just think like you pointed out not alot of artists do that everyone thinks I’ve got to bring out an album I’ve gotta have a major deal I’ve gotta have an album and sell their selves out before they’ve even stated their journey. Whereas with my stuff I’ve spaced it out so along the way my fan base has got bigger n bigger rather than just trying to make a big fan base and trying to expand more then not being to sustain it and going back to ground zero again. I just think for someone like me and only releasing my second album now I think it gives me more longevity as an album artist rather than saying this is my 11th album n 9 of them are shit.
I WANT TO TALK ABOUT YOUR NEW STYLE DIRECTION THAT YOUR GOING DOWN AT THE MOMENT, WHAT DO YOU THINK, WHERE DOES THAT COME FROM? YOU HAVE A STYLIST NOW, ARE YOU MORE INTO THE HIGH FASHION?
Yeah I’ve always been into fashion, yeah its not something that I’ve cared about to go, out of my way to let people know I care about it. Music and fashion go hand in hand. I’ve been alot more grown with my music and also more grown with my styling and fashion and how I want people to perceive me. Being a young man and growing up in the industry over the last 10 years as a young man and being around all different artist and being respected its time to compose Jammer as an artist and bring it forward as a whole package older people and younger people the trend setter and the fashion heads to get it. I’ts working too coz lots of people not just journalists are asking questions.
ITS BEEN REALLY INTERESTING TO WATCH OVER THE LAST FEW MONTHS OR SO TO BE HONEST I LOVE MY FASHION AND YOUR VERY GOOD AT KEEPING PEOPLE UPDATED ON WHATS GOING OFF
With growing up on a very obviously street based environment, so is really what the whole tracksuit thing is a culture thing and so many mc’s too. the reason i changed it up is because i realised people were thinking and treating me like i was a kid. that pushed away from dressing like that and embracing broader fashion.
ONE MORE THING IS DIZZEE GONNA BE ON STAGE AT YOUR BIRTHDAY BASH ?
Yeah, he’s messaged me to say he will be there he’s just at Glastonbury so I’m hoping it wont take it out of him and he’s ready to party tomorrow.

Here is JME’s new video ‘If you don’t know’ its amazing I love all the elements and the ever present ‘full focus’ on JME from Big Narstie’s cameo to JME rocking an Iron Man suit its a cracker and feels like a who’s who of the scene.
Taken from his recent Blacklisted’ project, this video is an insightful look into the young female psyche from a guy’s point of view. It’s not Skepta’s normal video territory and I really like it because of this. I hope you enjoy it too.
Skeptas debut on Birmingham based P110 has been a bit of a sensation, getting massive views in a few hours. Straight up has some big bars and yet again shows Skepta’s skill at working both the underground and commercial scenes.
